part of a post I started writing about Gideon, depression, and PTSD long ago:

I always wonder what standards everyone judges Gideon by. I don’t disagree that he’s reckless, selfish, and cold. He throws people into situations they have no preparation for, with mixed results. He expects everyone else to extend themselves to his level and has no regard for what they have to sacrifice to get there because he has sacrificed everything. He tries not to but sometimes he weighs the importance of one life over another. He puts more trust in the profile than he does in anything else. He believes that the minds of his team members are their most important weapons but he doesn’t do anything to help or protect their psychological health (maybe because he expects them all to be at his level). He wants to save humanity but sometimes forgets that individual humans are the ones who make up humanity.
